“Garden Out Back” marks the beginning of a new era from David Jane, featuring the most inspired, melodic and personal songwriting of his career. Inspired by a transformative, romantic year spent studying in Vancouver and the uncanny aftermath of returning to a home that no longer feels like home, “Garden Out Back” paves the way for a new set of songs that showcase a lost era, painting this time in melancholic beauty flushed with a desperate yearning to return.
“There’s a delicate beauty to these songs that summon memories of the great singer-songwriter artists of yesteryear. Listening through the record, you may think of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, or Joni Mitchell, you know, music that made you feel something.” - Aaron Willschick, V13 Media
David Jane is a singer/songwriter, award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker from Toronto. With “Garden Out Back” he officially returns to music, continuing to channel influences as varied as classic Hollywood, hip-hop, philosophy, foreign films, rock, literature, anime, theory visual arts and modern pop into deeply introspective lyrics and timeless hooks and melodies. This new era sees him partner with multi-instrumentalist and producer Sam Arion of Mute Choir, adding a contemplative ambience and indie flare to Jane’s timeless acoustic, folk/pop-inspired vibes. Their most recent release, “Eye On You,” was written and recorded for the credits of Jane’s filmmaking debut, the short film “Apnea,” premiering at the acclaimed Toronto horror festival Blood in the Snow this November. Meanwhile, Jane continues to write and perform in showcases around Toronto, gearing up for a string of new singles and EP, “Ambleside,” due early 2025.
